FAQ’s
Below you’ll find answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.
If you have more, contact us directly and we’d be happy to answer all of them.
If you have a Q, we have an A.
Chirripo Weather
You’ll be staying in a pristine location near beautiful Chirripó National Park, home to the country’s highest peak. Because of the elevation, evenings can feel cool to chilly, while daytime temperatures can be quite warm — after all, you’re only about 8 degrees from the equator! Don’t forget your sunscreen.
Getting There
You’ll arrive in San José, Costa Rica’s capital city, where you’ll stay overnight. Your hotel for the first night is included.
The following morning, you and the group will depart by private shuttle, heading into the mountains for a scenic journey to the mountain lodge. This beautiful three-hour drive winds through San Gerardo del General (San Isidro) and continues up into the small village of Canaan, where your mountain retreat awaits.
What To Bring
During the day, lightweight, quick-drying clothing is best suited for the warm mountain climate. Evenings can be cool, so we recommend packing warmer layers such as long pants, long-sleeved tops, and a light jacket if you tend to get chilly.
For the trails, choose a lightweight multi-sport shoe with good grip and solid foot support. If you prefer river sandals, they should fit securely and protect your toes. Our top recommendation is amphibious shoes that transition easily from land to water and dry quickly (brands like Merrell, Teva, and Salomon work well). A good pair of running shoes also does the job nicely.
A hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and one flashlight or headlamp per person are essential, as path lighting is limited. And don’t forget your camera, binoculars, and a good book or two for relaxing in a hammock and soaking in the peaceful surroundings.
A complete packing list will be sent once you book your escape to help you prepare for this unique rainforest experience.
Health & Safety
🌿 Health, Safety & Practical Tips
Medications
If you take any prescription medication, please bring enough for your entire stay in its original, clearly labeled container. While there is a local pharmacy in town that carries many common medications, we strongly recommend arriving fully prepared.
Local Medical Care
For minor medical needs, there is a local clinic in town. If necessary, we can arrange transport to the nearest hospital, located a short distance away in San Isidro. Using common sense and staying on marked paths greatly reduces any risk of injury.
Vaccinations
Tetanus and Twinrix (Hepatitis A & B) are generally recommended for most international travel. There is no malaria on the Pacific coast.
The risk of dengue fever (transmitted by mosquitoes) is very low, and there are no preventive vaccines or medications. If concerned, simply cover up at dawn and dusk and use insect repellent.
Water
You will have access to fresh, safe drinking water at the lodge.
When staying in San José at the beginning and end of your trip, we recommend drinking bottled water and using bottled water to wash fruits and vegetables.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended — both for unexpected flight changes and for medical coverage during your stay in Costa Rica. Please check with your insurance provider and bring a copy of your policy with you. If you need recommendations, we’re happy to assist.
Insects & Wildlife
You may be pleasantly surprised by how few biting insects there actually are, thanks to the abundance of birds, lizards, and bats that naturally keep populations in check. If you’re sensitive, wearing lightweight long pants in the evening and applying a small amount of insect repellent is usually more than sufficient.
Consider it part of the adventure — a tiny trade-off for the incredible closeness to nature and unforgettable wildlife experiences.
